George Mason University is making robust preparations for fall with our Safe Return to Campus plan.

This hybrid approach will allow for campus activities to resume with safety protocols such as the use of face coverings, physical distancing, and enhanced cleaning protocols.
The Safe Return to Campus Plan follows one guiding principle:
We pledge to support the health, safety, and well-being of the Mason community while fulfilling the university’s mission.
The return to campus will be conducted in stages to allow for adjustments as new information or revised guidance becomes available. Mason will provide updates and instructions to the university community.
Our plan includes such risk-mitigation strategies as:
- Behavioral expectations and practices.
- Engineering controls.
- Protective equipment and supplies.
These precautions address risk factors for exposure such as proximity (time and space) and behavior (physical distancing) with attention to individual risk of infection.
All faculty, staff, students, contractors and visitors are expected to comply with the policies, protocols, and guidelines.
We expect to have an expanded plan in July with more detailed fall planning operations, including guidelines on:
- Classroom instruction
- Operational procedures.
The Mason Continuity and Coordination Team (MCCT), under the leadership of the Emergency Management Executive Committee (EMEC), is developing and implementing the detailed plans, standards and policies that will guide the university going forward.
The MCCT consists of 18 working groups and key departments that comprise Mason’s Emergency Operations Group.
The President and the Executive Council leadership team review and approve all plans for fall.
We regularly speak with state and local public health organizations, as well as health and safety colleagues at peer institutions.
Our policies and plans align with federal, state, and regional public health guidance such as:
- Forward Virginia Guidelines (commonwealth).
- Interim Guidance for Businesses and Employers (CDC).
- Employer Information for Office Buildings (CDC).
- Considerations for Institutions of Higher Education (CDC).
Our plans will evolve as new information or revised guidance becomes available from federal, state and local officials.
