NEW FRONTIER IN WAR ON SMOKING

The US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) held a press conference in other to provide Americans with guidance on a new smoking product referred to as "electronic cigarette" or "e-cig". According to the statement issued by the FDA, electronic cigarettes are full of harmful toxins and carcinogens. Some can read into this statement that FDA is actually saying: "Stay away from this new product, just wait for us to test it properly and in the mean time continue using the old tobacco cigarettes that cause over 500,000 deaths each year in the US alone.

This statement is a marked departure from a long held FDA's policy of sticking to the policies based on the solid scientific evidence. Effectively, this new FDA's policy will be putting lives of millions of Americans in a danger.

Boston University School of Public Health professor Michael Siegel says that FDA's attitude was misleading, because the agency's own team had found only a low levels of toxins in the electronic cigarette products.

The new found evidence points out that level of the carcinogens in the electronic cigarettes is on a par with that in the nicotine replacement products. And nicotine replacement products are commonly accepted and available in the marketplace. As a matter of the fact, the level of the carcinogens in the electronic cigarettes is about 1,400 times lover that in the Marlboro cigarettes.

The latest surveys show that more than 1 million smokers have now switched to e-cigarettes, with its more socially accepted amenities, like holding the cigarette, inhaling the drag and exhaling the plume of smoke. It is obvious that FDA is fishing in the dark, because it is lacking the data that electronic cigarettes are posing the a health hazard so it is more bent on building a case for the sake of appearing to protect the public health, rather than actually protecting it.

But currently some of the worlds health authorities are seem to be deliberately turning their head away from the scientifically verifiable facts.
